I’ve been on both sides of job search and recruitment panel. I believe both sides need more attention to address or improve. So, I invited a recruiter (Kachi Malaka) on ‘our voice’ podcast, to discuss and answer some questions on job search, beliefs, perceptions and views. Below is the SoundCloud to our podcast discussion, which is also available on my website, SoundCloud, Google and Spotify podcast platforms.

Podcast discussion on job search, beliefs and interview developments

From myself and co-host (Cornelius Amusan), the first two questions to our speaker are related to below:

  1. Do job applicants really have to go through the repetitive process of filling out lengthy application forms, and then attaching a resume copy?
  2. Do employers or recruitment agents truly read and evaluate the applicant's responses to impact the interview selection or invitation stage?

Adverts to follow protocol and policies — when there is an existing candidate

Next we touched on views that some employers make job adverts just to follow protocol, such as advertising policies, notification period, etc, when there is already a back or preferred candidate for the job. To which we asked how potential candidates can be guided on suspicion of such adverts.

Adverts to exploit desperate candidates

This led us to ask about views that some job adverts are made with the goal of finding a solution to an in-house problem or to put it in another sense, to use people’s expertise and desperation to the recruiter’s advantage, while there was never a plan to offer any job.

Panel diversity

Yes, we had to touch on this! From my interview experiences, observed online comments and reviews, we asked the speaker to express views on the increasing call for diversity in interview panels. And more importantly, if lack or presence of diversity would make have any impact on bias and pre-judged perceptions during the screening and interview stages?

Lastly, what are your open tips or recommendations to folks out there looking for jobs?

Also, any hint on ways to improve the negative views about recruiters and job posts?
